Introduction to the Student Study Site

This Web-based student study site is intended to enhance students' understanding of Essentials of Science Classroom Assessment by Xiufeng Liu. Please note that all the materials on this site are especially geared toward maximizing the potential for students to learn and enhance class discussion.

The Web-Based student study site contains E-flashcards, practice quizzes for students, recommended Web sites and more.

Chapter Specific Resources


The web quiz for students provides multiple choice and true/false questions to enhance students' understanding of the material. Answers are provided for each question after the quiz has been completed.


The E-Flashcards are a tool for students to enhance their understanding of key terms outlined in the chapters. E-Flashcards may also be used as a study tool for exams and quizzes.

Abstracts of Research on Student Alternative Conceptions

Here you will find abstracts covering over 40 common K-12 student preconceptions of a wide variety of science concepts.  These can help teachers better develop diagnostic assessment instruments and plan more relevant science instruction.  (These abstracts correlate to Chapter 2 in the book.)

Vee Diagram

A Vee Diagram template in PDF format is provided to help students understand relationships among various components of an inquiry process.  (This correlates to Chapter 4 in the book.)

Performance Assessment Tasks

Here you will find a collection of performance assessment tasks for Grade 8, Biology, and Earth Science.  The tasks may be used as formative assessment in the forms of demonstrations, student labs and classroom practices.  District science coordinators may also use the tasks for professional development on how to develop performance assessment.  (This correlates to Chapter 4 in the book.)

Using Microsoft Excel to Analyze Data

This document describes how to analyze data using Microsoft Excel, complete with screenshots to better assist student comprehension.  (This correlates to Chapter 8 in the book.)


Three templates (Item and Test Analysis Template for Classroom Tests, Item and Test Analysis Template for State Tests, and Sample Item and Test Analysis) are provided for  science teachers to use in analyzing assessment data of their classes.  (These correlate to Chapter 8 in the book.)
